Stake Blocks Ireland Access and Eyes GRAI Licence

Stake blocks access from Ireland as the operator considers a GRAI licence

Stake is no longer available to players in Ireland after restricting access to the market following engagement with the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland.

According to The Irish Times, Stake blocked access to Irish users after engagement with the regulator. A Stake spokesperson also confirmed that Irish registrations had been closed and said the operator would look at applying for a licence under Ireland’s new regulatory regime.

Stake’s current Terms of Service now list Ireland among its prohibited jurisdictions, meaning players located in the country are not permitted to use the real-money service. The terms also prohibit attempts to circumvent geographic restrictions.

For a broader overview of the operator, including its casino, sportsbook, payments and account features, see our Stake review.

What Changed for Stake Players in Ireland?

The Irish Times reported that Stake blocked access to users in Ireland after engagement with the GRAI. The regulator itself did not publicly name Stake when describing the affected operators, but Stake subsequently confirmed that it had closed registrations in the Irish market.

For players, the practical result is straightforward: Stake should not currently be treated as an available betting or casino option while located in Ireland.

This is more significant than a change to a promotion or payment method because it changes whether the platform itself can currently be used from the country.

Is Stake Applying for an Irish Gambling Licence?

Stake has not publicly confirmed that a licence application has already been submitted.

Instead, the operator said it will look to apply for a licence under the new regime. That distinction matters because an intention to apply does not mean a licence has been granted or that Irish access is about to reopen.

The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland began accepting applications for Remote Betting Licences in February 2026 as part of Ireland’s new gambling licensing framework.

Any future return by Stake would therefore depend on its regulatory position and the permissions required to serve Irish customers.

What Happens to Existing Irish Stake Accounts?

The GRAI has said that it is working with operators that have geo-blocked their services to ensure consumers in Ireland are promptly refunded money held with those operators. The regulator did not identify Stake by name in that statement, so customers should confirm the status of their own account directly rather than assuming a particular withdrawal process.

Players with an existing balance should use the account and support options made available to them for withdrawals or account questions.

Stake’s current terms also state that attempts to circumvent geographic restrictions breach its rules, so using a VPN or another location-masking method is not an appropriate workaround.

Is Ireland Now a Restricted Country on Stake?

Yes. Ireland appears explicitly in Stake’s current list of prohibited jurisdictions.

That status could change if Stake later obtains the regulatory approvals required to operate in the country, but players should rely on the current restrictions rather than a possible future licence.
